SAIs in dialogue: Security in Europe

What is the security situation in the EU member states – and what contribution can the European SAIs make?

This issue was the focus of a high-level conference in Warsaw organised by the Polish Court of Audit (Najwyższa Izba Kontroli) as part of the Polish EU Council Presidency.

In addition to the presidents of the European SAIs, representatives of international organisations such as NATO, Interpol and the OECD also participated in the conference. Together, they discussed the role of SAIs in strengthening security within the EU.

Our president, Kay Scheller, talked about the German SAI’s experiences as to the “resilience of public core functions and critical infrastructures”.

Resilience is the ability to overcome crises and continuously adapt to changing conditions. Such continuous adaptation goes hand in hand with ongoing spending efforts, which means that budgets are constantly under strain. It is thus essential not only to make resources available, but also to utilise them effectively. Audits in this area are crucial to achieving real progress regarding resilience.

Outlook

The conference showed that close cooperation between European SAIs is an important factor when it comes to security in Europe. The conference therefore also focussed on planning possible joint activities.
